Today, the statistical agency “Strategy Analytics” announced the global mobile phone shipment report for the first quarter of 2021. It shows a strong demand for mobile phones around the globe, with the increasing share of 5G devices. According to the provided data, 340 million smartphones were shipped globally during Q1, 2021, an increase of 24% year-on-year, setting a new high since 2015.

While specifying the reason the agency pointed out that these numbers were achieved due to the strong demand of consumers and 5G push from Chinese vendors. The report further added that the 5G devices drove the Chinese market in different price segments. The Chinese smartphone industry played a major role with 35% YoY growth reaching 94 million units in Q1 2021. Overall, the top 5 manufacturers shipped 76% of the total units.

Samsung tops the chart of Q1, 2021 shipments.

Furthermore, Samsung leads the chart once again with 77 million units shipped, grabbing a market share of 23%, which is 32% YoY growth. Apple and Xiaomi ranked second and third, with shipments of 57 million units and 49 million units, with market shares of 17% and 15%, an increase of 44% and 80% year-on-year, respectively. The fourth and fifth places are OPPO (excluding Realme and OnePlus) and Vivo, among which the 85% annual growth rate of Vivo shipments is the highest among the top 5 vendors.

The biggest loser on this list is Huawei. The company is out of the top 5 list for the first time due to some restrictions applied in the global market. According to the Chinese media, the company shipped less than 20 million units globally. All in all, Huawei is slowly turning into a sinking ship when it comes to smartphones. What are your thoughts?
